California Use Tax
California Use Tax is a tax imposed on goods purchased for use, storage, or consumption in California when no sales tax was collected at the time of purchase. This typically applies to out-of-state purchases where the seller does not collect California sales tax.
When Does Use Tax Apply?
- When you buy goods from a seller outside California and no sales tax was collected.
- When you purchase goods online or through mail order from out-of-state vendors who do not collect California sales tax.
- When you bring goods into California from another state or country for personal use.
How to Report and Pay Use Tax
Use tax is reported and paid on your California state income tax return using Form 540 or Form 540NR, depending on your residency status. You may need to complete Form 540 or Form 540NR to report use tax.
Important Notes
- Use tax applies to tangible personal property, including items like furniture, electronics, and vehicles.
- It does not apply to services or digital products unless specifically defined by California law.
- Taxpayers are responsible for self-reporting and paying use tax if applicable.
