Can Amended Returns Be Electronically Filed?
Yes, amended returns can be electronically filed under certain conditions. The IRS allows taxpayers to e-file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, using tax filing software for the current tax year and the two prior tax years. However, there are specific requirements and limitations based on how the original return was filed.
Eligibility for Electronic Filing
- You can e-file Form 1040-X to amend your Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, or 1040-SS/PR for the current tax year and the two prior years.
- If your original return was filed electronically, you may be eligible to file the amended return electronically as well.
- If your original return was filed on paper, the amended return must also be filed on paper.
Important Notes
- Electronic filing is only available through tax filing software. You cannot e-file Form 1040-X directly through the IRS website.
- For returns from years prior to the two most recent, you must mail your Form 1040-X to the IRS.
- When e-filing is not available (e.g., during off-seasons), you must file your amended return by mail along with all required supporting documents such as W-2s and corrected forms.
How to File an Amended Return with OLT (Online Taxes)
- If you originally filed your return with OLT (Online Taxes), you can log in to your account and select the year you wish to amend.
- From the Tax Return Status page, choose “File an Amended Return.”
- This will take you back to the original interview where you can update only the necessary information.
- When e-filing is open, you can electronically file both federal and most state amended returns.
- If e-filing is closed, you must mail all forms and supporting documents to the IRS and relevant state agencies.
