If you have removed the Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction from your tax return and are encountering an error message when trying to file, this is a common issue. The system may still display a Non-Critical Error on the Tax Summary page, even after removing the QBI deduction.
How to Resolve the Error
- When you reach the Tax Summary page and see the error, select “Ignore and Continue”.
- This will allow you to proceed with filing your return without interruption.
- The error is non-critical and does not affect the validity of your return if you have correctly removed the QBI deduction.
How to Remove QBI Deduction and Form 8995 / 8995-A
- Go to the Deductions section in your tax software.
- Click Show More next to Qualified Business Income Deduction - Form 8995 / 8995-A.
- If you previously added a business activity for QBI, click the red trash can icon to delete it.
- Save your changes and select Done with Qualified Trade or Business activity.
Important Notes
- The QBI deduction is only available if you have taxable income and qualified business income.
- If your taxable income is $0, no QBI deduction can be calculated.
- For individuals with taxable income before QBI deduction of $197,300 or less (or $394,600 if married filing jointly), use Form 8995.
- If your income exceeds these thresholds, use Form 8995-A.
