How do I make changes on my return after it is accepted?
If you need to correct or update information on a tax return that has already been accepted by the IRS, you must file an amended return. This is done using Form 1040-X, which is specifically designed for correcting previously filed tax returns.
Steps to File an Amended Return
- You can also log into our site to get a status message regarding your return.
- Once your return is accepted by the IRS, no changes can be made unless you file an amended return 1040-X. Amended returns can now be electronically filed (when e-file is opened).
- If e-file is closed, this form must be paper filed along with all of your financial reporting statements (W-2's, etc.) and corrected tax forms. For more information, see Form 1040x Instructions.

- You will need to log in to your tax return, which will take you to the Tax Return Status page, where there will be a link to File an Amended Return. Change only the inputs that need to be changed.

- If you paper filed the original return, you will need to paper file the amended return.
