Advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit (APTC) are made directly to your insurance provider during the year to help pay for your qualified health plan premiums through the Marketplace. These payments are based on the Marketplace’s estimate of the Premium Tax Credit (PTC) you will be eligible for when you file your tax return. To receive APTC, you must enroll in a qualified health plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace and apply for the credit during enrollment.

How APTC Works

  • Eligibility: Your eligibility for APTC is determined by the Marketplace based on your estimated annual income, family size, and the cost of coverage in your area.
  • Payment Process: The Marketplace sends the APTC directly to your insurance company to cover part or all of your monthly premiums.
  • Reconciliation: When you file your tax return, you must complete Form 8962 to reconcile the APTC you received with the actual PTC you qualify for based on your actual income and family size for the year.

Reconciliation on Form 8962

  • If APTC > PTC: You received more in advance payments than you’re entitled to. You may need to repay the excess, subject to repayment limits (see Form 8962, Part III).
  • If APTC < PTC: You received less than you’re entitled to. The difference is your net PTC, which reduces your tax liability or increases your refund (entered on Form 8962, line 26, and reported on Schedule 3, line 9).

Required Documentation

  • Complete Form 8962 using information from your Form 1095-A (received from the Marketplace).
  • Enter annual premiums (column A, line 33) in column (a) of Form 8962, line 11.
  • Enter APTC amounts (column C, line 33) in column (f) of Form 8962, line 11.
  • Calculate your net PTC by comparing line 24 (your total PTC) with line 25 (total APTC received).
