AGI/Self-Select PIN Rejection: What You Need to Know
When filing your tax return electronically, you may encounter an AGI/Self-Select PIN rejection. This occurs when the IRS does not match the information you provided for your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or Personal Identification Number (PIN). Here’s how to resolve it.
Common Causes of Rejection
- Incorrect AGI Entry: You entered an incorrect AGI from your previous year’s return (e.g., 2024 Form 1040, Line 11).
- Invalid PIN: The PIN you selected does not match the IRS’s records.
- Missing or Incomplete Data: The IRS may not have your AGI on file if you did not file a return or filed under a different name or SSN.
How to Fix AGI/Self-Select PIN Rejection
- Enter Correct 2024 AGI: Use the AGI from Line 11 of your 2024 Form 1040. If you’re unsure, request a transcript from the IRS.
- Use a Single '0' for AGI: If rejected, you can enter a single '0' in the 2024 AGI box and leave the PIN box blank.
- Request an IRS Transcript: Visit https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript to obtain your official tax record.
- Verify Identity with IRS: If your AGI was negative, enter '0' for AGI and leave the PIN box blank.
What is AGI?
Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is your total income minus adjustments to income. It is used to determine eligibility for certain tax credits and deductions. For example, on Form 1040, AGI is calculated on Line 11 after subtracting adjustments like student loan interest or contributions to retirement accounts.
