Eligibility Requirements

How to Claim the Credit
To claim the Credit for Child Adoption Costs on your California state tax return using OLT (Online Taxes) software:
- Log in to your tax return in the OLT software.
- From the left menu (or tap the three dots in the top-right corner for mobile), select State.
- Click Start or Revisit California State.
- Under the Credits section, click Start or Edit next to Credit for Child Adoption Costs.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your adoption expenses and claim the credit.
Important Notes
- The credit is non-refundable, meaning it can only reduce your California state tax liability to zero.
- Only qualified adoption expenses (such as legal fees, travel, and agency fees) are eligible.
- Adoption expenses must be paid during the tax year for which you are claiming the credit.
