Colorado Tax Payment Options
When filing your Colorado individual income tax return, you have several options for making your tax payment. The Colorado Department of Revenue provides multiple methods to ensure taxpayers can meet their obligations conveniently and securely.
Payment Methods
- Check or Money Order: You may mail a check or money order with your tax return. Ensure the payment is made payable to "Colorado Department of Revenue" and include your name, address, and tax year on the payment.
- Electronic Payment (E-file with Payment): If you file electronically using the Colorado Department of Revenue’s online system, you can pay your tax directly through the platform. This method is secure and allows for immediate processing.
- Direct Debit from Bank Account: You can authorize a direct debit from your bank account when filing electronically. This option is free and reduces the risk of payment errors.
- Debit or Credit Card: Payments can be made using a debit or credit card through authorized third-party processors. Note that convenience fees may apply.
Estimated Tax Payments
For taxpayers who expect to owe more than $1,000 in Colorado income tax for the year, estimated tax payments may be required. These payments can be made using Form DR 0104EP, which is specifically designed for estimated income tax payments.
Payment Forms
- Form DR 0104: The primary Colorado Individual Income Tax Form used for filing and payment. It includes line 24 for reporting Colorado income tax withheld and line 21 for total tax due.
- Form DR 0104EP: Used for making estimated tax payments throughout the year. This form must be submitted with a check or money order and should not be cut.
- Form DR 0900: The Individual Income Tax Payment Form, which can be used to make payments with a check or money order.
Important Notes
- Always ensure your payment is received by the Colorado Department of Revenue before the filing deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
- If you are filing electronically, you can use the E-file Attachment option to submit forms like DR 0104AMT or DR 0104CR electronically.
- For part-year residents or nonresidents, additional calculations may be required using Form DR 0104PN.
