When Entering Your W-2G on OLT: Which State Should You Select?
When entering Form W-2G in OLT (Online Taxes), the correct state to select depends on how the software is structuring the entry screen. For federal tax reporting purposes, gambling winnings are always reported on your federal return regardless of state. However, when a “state selection” field appears in tax software, it is generally used to map potential state tax withholding and reporting information, not to determine federal taxability.
For most W-2G entries, the appropriate selection is the state where the gambling activity occurred (the state of the payer/location of the win), because Form W-2G state fields (Boxes 13–15) are based on the location where withholding, if any, occurred. Your state of residence is handled separately when the software prepares your state income tax return.
Why the State of Winnings Matters
- Form W-2G is issued by the payer (casino, racetrack, lottery, or other gambling entity) based on the location where the gambling transaction occurred.
- State information on Form W-2G (Boxes 13–15) is used only if state income tax was withheld or reported at the source. These fields are not used for federal tax calculation.
- For federal reporting, gambling winnings are included in income regardless of where the gambling occurred, under Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Other Income.
OLT Software Guidance
When using OLT’s software to enter your W-2G:
- Navigate to the Federal section under Income.
- Select "Show more" near Other Income, then choose "Add or Edit" next to Gambling Winnings, W2-G, Gambling Losses.
- Follow on-screen prompts to enter details, including the state where the winnings were received.
Important Notes
- Gambling winnings are taxable federally regardless of state.
- Form W-2G state boxes (13–15) are used only for state/local withholding reporting purposes.
- State taxation rules vary: some states tax based on residency, while others may also consider source income rules.
- The payer (casino, lottery, racetrack) reports W-2G based on where the winning event occurred.
- You do not change federal reporting based on state selection in software.
