The Hawaii Credit for Low-Income Household Renters is a nonrefundable tax credit designed to assist low-income individuals and families with housing expenses. This credit is available to taxpayers who meet specific income and residency requirements and who rent their primary residence in Hawaii.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a resident of Hawaii.
- Must rent your primary residence in世Hawaii.

- Must file Form N-15 (Hawaii Individual Income Tax Return) or equivalent.
How to Claim the Credit
To claim the credit, you must complete and attach Schedule X to your Hawaii state tax return. Schedule X includes information about the credit for low-income household renters and the credit for child and dependent care expenses.
Follow these steps in OLT (Online Taxes) software:
- From within your tax return (Online), click on "State" in the left menu.
- Click "Start or Revisit Hawaii State."
- Under the "Credits" section, click "Start or Revisit" near Schedule X - Low Income Household Renters, and Credit for Child and Dependent Care Expenses.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the form.
Important Notes
- This credit is nonrefundable, meaning it can only reduce your tax liability to zero.
- The credit is applied after all other credits, except for the carryover of the High Technology Investment Tax Credit.
