Higher Education Savings Accounts Used for K-12 Tuition
Minnesota taxpayers who use distributions from higher education savings accounts (such as 529 plans) to pay for K-12 tuition may be eligible for a subtraction on their state tax return. This provision allows taxpayers to reduce their Minnesota taxable income by the amount used for K-12 education expenses, subject to certain limits.
Eligible Distributions
- Include the total distributions from the higher education savings account used to pay K-12 tuition.
- Alternatively, include the total earnings reported on federal Form 1099-Q for the year, whichever is less.
Reporting on Minnesota Tax Return
Report this amount on Line 6 of Schedule M1M, titled "Distributions from higher education savings accounts used for K-12 tuition." This line is part of the Minnesota income tax return and is used to claim the subtraction.
Important Notes
- You must have received the distribution as an individual, partner, shareholder, or beneficiary.
- The subtraction is only available for distributions used specifically for K-12 tuition expenses.
- Do not include distributions that are subject to additional federal tax.
