Indiana Offset Credits - Schedule 6
Indiana Offset Credits are designed to reduce your state income tax liability by allowing taxpayers to claim certain credits that offset their tax obligation. These credits are reported on Schedule 6 of the Indiana individual income tax return (Form IT-40 or Form IT-40PNR). Schedule 6 is specifically used to report offset credits, which may include credits for contributions to Indiana’s 529 college savings plans, ABLE accounts, or other state-specific credits.
What Are Offset Credits?
Offset credits are tax credits that reduce the amount of tax you owe after your regular tax is calculated. They are not refunds but rather direct reductions in your tax liability. These credits are typically tied to specific programs or contributions that support Indiana’s economic and educational goals.
How to Report Offset Credits on Schedule 6
- Line 8 (Form IT-40) or Line 13 (Form IT-40PNR): Enter any offset credits from Schedule 6 or Schedule G. These may include credits from contributions to Indiana’s 529 plan, ABLE accounts, or other approved programs.
- Line 3 (Schedule 6): Add any recapture of certain Indiana credits, such as those related to business incentives or other state-specific programs.
- Line 1 (Schedule 6): For nonresidents, this line may include nonresident professional team member’s county tax from Schedule E, line 4.
Common Offset Credits
- Indiana 529 College Savings Plan Credit: Contributions to an Indiana 529 plan may qualify for a state tax credit. This credit is reported on Schedule IN-529 and must be enclosed with your return.
- Indiana ABLE Account Credit: Contributions to an ABLE account for individuals with disabilities may qualify for a credit. This credit is reported on Schedule IN-ABLE and requires code 872 on line 6 of Form IT-40 or IT-40PNR.
- Other Local Credits: Currently, no other local credits are available for reporting on Schedule 6.
Important Notes
- Always ensure you attach required schedules (e.g., Schedule IN-529, Schedule IN-ABLE) when claiming a credit.
- Some credits require certification from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) or other state agencies.
- For nonresidents, proration rules may apply when calculating credits based on time spent in Indiana.
