Iowa Charitable Contribution Check-Offs
Iowa offers taxpayers the opportunity to make voluntary charitable contributions through check-off options on their state income tax return. These contributions are made directly to designated charitable programs and are not tied to any specific tax benefit for the taxpayer in the year of contribution. However, they may qualify as charitable contributions for the following year’s tax return, provided the return is filed during the calendar year.
How to Make a Charitable Contribution Check-Off
- Log in to your tax return in the Online Taxes (OLT) software.
- Navigate to the State section in the left menu (or tap the three dots in the top-right corner for mobile devices).
- Select Start or Revisit Iowa state.
- Go to the Payments section and locate the Contributions page.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your voluntary contribution amount.
Note: You may contribute regardless of whether you are entitled to a refund or owe taxes. However, your contribution will reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe.
Important Considerations
- Your contribution qualifies as a charitable contribution on next year’s return if filed during the calendar year.
- Amended returns cannot be used to change your contribution amount.
- These contributions are not tax-deductible in the year they are made but may be claimed as deductions in the following tax year.
