Iowa Early Childhood Development Credit
The Iowa Early Childhood Development Credit is a state tax credit designed to support families with young children. This credit is available to eligible taxpayers who claim qualifying dependents under the age of 6. The credit amount and eligibility are based on income and filing status.
Eligibility Criteria
- Taxpayer must claim a qualifying dependent child under the age of 6.
- Must file as an individual or married filing jointly.
- Income limitations apply: The credit begins to phase out for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) exceeding $90,000. For married filing jointly, this threshold applies to the claiming spouse’s income only.
- Nonresident and part-year residents must adjust the credit based on Iowa-source net income using the formula provided on Form IA 1040.
How to Claim the Credit
The Early Childhood Development Credit is claimed on Form IA 1040, line 24. Taxpayers should enter the total credit amount allowed based on their qualifying dependents and income level.
For nonresidents and part-year residents, the credit must be adjusted using the following formula:
Iowa-source net income (IA 126, line 29) × Total credit allowed = Credit on line 24
Important Notes
- MARRIED SEPARATE FILERS: The credit is taken by the parent claiming the dependent. The $90,000 income limit does not include the non-claiming spouse’s income.
- The credit is non-refundable, meaning it can only reduce tax liability to zero.
- For detailed instructions, refer to the official Iowa Department of Revenue guidelines.
