IPPIN Identity Protection PIN
An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number assigned by the IRS to help prevent identity theft and fraudulent tax returns using your Social Security Number (SSN). The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS and serves as an additional security measure when filing your federal income tax return.
Who Can Get an IP PIN?
- All taxpayers are now eligible for an IP PIN, starting in 2021.
- It is especially recommended for individuals who have been victims of identity theft or tax fraud.
- The IRS sends a new IP PIN annually to those who have been affected by identity theft via U.S. Postal Service.
How to Use Your IP PIN
- When filing Form 1040, Form 1040X, or other individual tax forms, enter your IP PIN in the designated space next to your occupation.
- You must enter all six digits correctly. If you did not receive an IP PIN, leave the space blank.
- For electronic filing, the IP PIN is used as part of the authentication process to verify your identity.
How to Apply for an IP PIN
- Visit IRS.gov/IPPIN and use the "Get an IP PIN" tool.
- Alternatively, you can file Form 15227 if you meet income requirements or make an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center.
Self-Select PIN Option
- For taxpayers filing electronically, the Self-Select PIN method allows you to create your own PIN.
- If married filing jointly, both spouses must create and enter their own PINs as electronic signatures.
