M1CAT - Minnesota Casualty & Theft
Form M1CAT, titled "Casualty and Theft," is used by Minnesota taxpayers to report gains and losses from casualty events or thefts. This form is specifically designed for Minnesota state tax purposes and must be attached to your Minnesota income tax return along with Schedule MISA, Minnesota Itemized Deductions.
Purpose of Schedule M1CAT
- Report gains and losses from casualties or thefts that occurred during the tax year.
- Attach to your Minnesota state tax return (Form M1) along with Schedule MISA.
- Use information from federal Form 4684 if you reported a federally declared disaster area.
When to Use Schedule M1CAT
- Complete Schedule M1CAT if you had a casualty or theft loss during the tax year.
- Do not complete Schedule M1CAT if you reported a net gain from a casualty or theft on your federal Form 4684.
- If you filed federal Form 1040-NR and entered an amount on line 6 of Schedule A, you must complete Schedule M1CAT for that casualty or theft loss.
How to Add Schedule M1CAT in OLT Software
- From within your tax return (Online), click on "State" in the left menu.
- Click "Start or Revisit Minnesota State."
- Navigate to the "Deductions" section and locate Schedule M1CAT - Casualty and Theft.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the form.
Important Notes
- Schedule M1CAT is only required if you have a casualty or theft loss to report.
- Ensure you have completed federal Form 4684 if applicable, as it may affect your state filing requirements.
