M1MTC - Alternative Minimum Tax Credit
The Minnesota Alternative Minimum Tax Credit (M1MTC) allows taxpayers to claim a credit for any Minnesota alternative minimum tax (AMT) paid in prior years, similar to the federal AMT credit. This credit helps reduce the burden of paying AMT in Minnesota, especially if you were subject to federal AMT and are now eligible for a credit in Minnesota.
When to Use Schedule M1MTC
- Complete Schedule M1MTC if you paid federal AMT and are claiming a Minnesota AMT credit.
- It is required if you had to pay federal AMT when filing Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.
- Even if you were not subject to federal AMT, you may still be required to pay Minnesota AMT and claim the credit.
How to Complete Schedule M1MTC
- Start by completing Part I of federal Form 6251, even if you did not file it with your federal return.
- Include the completed federal Form 6251 with your Form M1, Individual Income Tax.
- Enter the amount from line 1 of your Form M1 or line 43 of Schedule M1NC (if applicable) on line 1 of Schedule M1MTC.
- Follow the worksheet instructions to calculate your Minnesota AMT credit.
