M1SA - Minnesota Itemized Deductions
Minnesota residents who wish to claim itemized deductions on their state income tax return must complete and file Schedule M1SA, titled "Minnesota Itemized Deductions." This form allows taxpayers to reduce their taxable income by claiming eligible deductions, such as charitable contributions, casualty and theft losses, and certain miscellaneous deductions.
When to File Schedule M1SA
- Complete Schedule M1SA if your total itemized deductions exceed your standard deduction for Minnesota.
- Use the Standard Deduction Table provided by the Minnesota Department of Revenue to determine your standard deduction amount.
- Individuals filing Form 1040-NR (nonresident aliens) are not eligible for the standard deduction unless a U.S. tax treaty permits it. However, they may still claim certain itemized deductions such as charitable contributions or casualty losses.
How to Add Schedule M1SA in OLT Software
When filing your Minnesota state tax return using OLT (Online Taxes) software:
- From within your tax return (Online), click on "State" in the left menu (or tap the three dots in the top-right corner for mobile devices).
- Select "Start or Revisit Minnesota State."
- Navigate to the "Deductions" section and locate "MISA - Minnesota Itemized Deductions."
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your deduction details.
Important Notes
- Schedule M1SA is only required if you are itemizing deductions. If your itemized deductions are less than your standard deduction, you should claim the standard deduction instead.
- For taxpayers who filed Form 1040-NR, only specific deductions (e.g., charitable contributions, casualty losses) may be claimed on Schedule M1SA.
- Ensure all deductions are properly documented and meet Minnesota state requirements.
