Michigan Amended Return: What You Need to Know
When you need to correct or update your Michigan individual income tax return (MI-1040), you must file an amended return. This process ensures your tax information is accurate and compliant with Michigan Department of Treasury regulations.
How to File an Amended Return
- Check the Amended Return box at the top of your MI-1040 form.
- Include a completed Schedule AMD (Amended Return Explanation of Changes). This form requires you to explain all reasons for amending your return and identify the specific line(s) or schedules that have changed.
- Attach all applicable schedules and supporting documentation. Failure to provide complete information may result in processing delays or denial of your return.
Supporting Documentation Requirements
To avoid delays, include the following with your amended return:
- A copy of the corrected Michigan or federal schedules (e.g., Schedule D, MI-1040D, etc.).
- Any documents that substantiate the reason for the amendment (e.g., corrected W-2, 1099, or other tax forms).
- For changes related to capital gains or losses, include Form MI-8949 or MI-1040D as applicable.
Important Notes
- You cannot amend your use tax amount on the MI-1040. If you need to correct use tax, you must write a letter to the Michigan Department of Treasury, Business Taxes Division, P.O. Box 30427, Lansing, MI 48909.
- For city-level amended returns, place an “X” in the designated box and complete Part 6: AMENDED RETURN. Use the same form type you originally filed.
- Estates or trusts claiming a Michigan flow-through entity (FTE) tax credit on Form MI-1041 must include supporting documentation such as a copy of the federal return and other relevant forms.
Common Reasons for Amending
Common reasons include:
- Correcting income or deduction amounts.
- Claiming a tax credit you previously missed.
- Adjusting capital gains orли (using Form MI-8949 or MI-1040D).
- Updating information related to apportionment or allocation (refer to MI-1040H).
