Minnesota General Election Fund
The Minnesota General Election Fund allows taxpayers to contribute $5 to support candidates for state office by designating it on their Minnesota income tax return. This fund helps candidates cover campaign expenses and is available to individuals filing their state tax return.
How to Contribute
- When filing your Minnesota individual income tax return, you may choose to designate $5 to the General Election Fund.
- If you are filing a joint return, both you and your spouse may each designate $5, totaling $10.
- The contribution is optional and does not require additional forms if you are already filing Form M1 or another applicable Minnesota tax form.
- If you did not designate the contribution on your original return, you may do so on an amended return or when filing a return for a different year.
Designation Options
- General Campaign Fund: The $5 will be distributed among candidates of all major parties listed on the return.
- Specific Party: You may choose to designate the $5 to a specific political party by entering the corresponding code number on the return.
Important Notes
- The contribution is not a tax deduction and does not reduce your tax liability.
- This option is available only when filing a Minnesota individual income tax return (such as Form M1 or Form M1PR).
- For more information or assistance, contact the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
