When filing your Missouri individual income tax return, you may be eligible for an exemption on certain types of pension and Social Security benefits. This article outlines how to calculate and claim these exemptions using Form MO-1040 and related instructions.
Public Pension Exemption
- Public pensions include those received from federal, state, or local government sources.
- Enter the taxable public pension amount for each spouse from Federal Form 1040 or 1040-SR, Line 5b on Form MO-A, Part 3, Line 1Y or 1S.
- The exemption amount is the lesser of the amount from Line 1 or $47,633 (maximum social security benefit).
Social Security and Social Security Disability Benefits
- Taxable Social Security benefits must be allocated by each spouse’s share of benefits received during the year.
- Complete the Worksheet for Lines 1 and 2 in Form MO-A, Part 3 to determine each spouse’s portion.
- For Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), enter the federal taxable amount from Federal Form 1040 or 1040-SR, Line 6b on Form MO-A, Part 3, Line 2Y or 2S.
Private Pension Exemption
- Private pensions include annuities, pensions, IRAs, and 401(k) plans funded by private sources.
- Enter the taxable private pension amount for each spouse from Federal Form 1040 or 1040-SR, Lines 4b and 5b on Form MO-A, Part 3, Line 6Y or 6S.
- The exemption amount is the lesser of the amount from Line 6 or $6,000.
Required Attachments
- Attach a copy of your federal return (pages 1 and 2).
- Include Form(s) 1099-R and SSA-1099 to support your claim.
- Failure to provide required documentation may result in disallowance of your exemption.
Reporting on MO-1040
- Enter the total exemption amount from Form MO-A, Part 3 on MO-1040, Line 8.
- Ensure all income sources are reported accurately, including wages, interest, dividends, and capital gains.
