Ohio State Tax Extension
Ohio residents who need additional time to file their state income tax return may request an extension. While the federal tax deadline is typically April 15, Ohio’s state tax deadline aligns with the federal deadline. However, if you are unable to file by the due date, you can request an extension using Form IT 1040.
How to Request an Extension
- File Form IT 1040 by the original due date (April 15) to request an extension.
- Complete the extension request section on the form, indicating your need for additional time.
- Submit the form electronically or by mail to the Ohio Department of Taxation.
- Note: An extension grants additional time to file, not to pay. Any tax owed must still be paid by the original due date to avoid penalties and interest.
Important Considerations
- Extensions are granted for up to six months from the original due date.
- Ensure all required information is included, such as your name, address, Social Security number, and estimated tax liability.
- Use black ink and uppercase letters when filing by paper.
- Do not staple or paper-clip your return; submit forms separately if filing both Ohio and school district returns.
Software Assistance
Online Taxes (OLT) software can guide you through adding Form IT 1040 and requesting an extension. Within the software:
- Go to the State section.
- Select "Start or Revisit Ohio State."
- Follow on-screen prompts to enter personal, income, and deduction information.
- Review your return in the 'Tax Summary' section before submission.
