When filing an amended Oklahoma income tax return, you must complete Form 511 (or Form 511-NR for nonresidents) and mark the “Amended Return” checkbox at the top of page 1. Each amended return must be filed separately for each tax year being corrected and must be mailed in a separate envelope. You cannot combine amendments for multiple years in one envelope.

Key Requirements for Amended Returns

  • IRS Confirmation Recommended: If you are amending your federal return, it is recommended to obtain IRS confirmation of approval before filing your amended Oklahoma return. Filing without this confirmation may delay processing, though it may be necessary to avoid expiration of the statute of limitations.
  • Payment Information: On line 30 of Form 511, enter any amounts paid with the original return plus any payments made after filing.
  • Supporting Documentation: For Form 511-NR, include a copy of Federal Form 1040-X, Form 1045, RAR, or other IRS correspondence. Also provide a copy of any IRS refund check or statement of adjustment.
  • Single-Year Limitation: No amended return may cover more than one tax year. Each year must be filed separately.

Additional Guidance

  • If you are amending your federal return, it is recommended that you wait until the IRS has completed the federal changes before filing your Oklahoma amended return. However, if waiting could cause the statute of limitations to expire, you should file the Oklahoma amended return before the expiration date.
  • If your amended return is the result of a federal audit, adjustment, or other change, attach copies of the applicable federal documentation, such as Form 1040-X, Form 1045, a Revenue Agent's Report (RAR), or other IRS correspondence, along with any supporting schedules required to explain the Oklahoma changes.
