The Oregon 2025 individual income tax instructions explain how full-year residents, part-year residents, and nonresidents calculate their Oregon income tax, claim deductions and credits, and file their Oregon individual income tax return.

Complete your federal income tax return first, because many amounts reported on your Oregon return are based on your federal return, including your federal adjusted gross income (AGI).

1. Choosing Your Filing Form

Oregon provides three individual income tax returns based on your residency status:

  • Form OR-40 (Full-Year Resident): Use this form if you were an Oregon resident for the entire tax year.
  • Form OR-40-P (Part-Year Resident): Use this form if you were an Oregon resident for only part of the tax year.
  • Form OR-40-N (Nonresident): Use this form if you were not an Oregon resident but had income from Oregon sources.

2. Required Schedules for Adjustments and Deductions

Depending on your tax situation, you may need to complete one or more of the following schedules:

  • Schedule OR-ASC (Form OR-40): Used by full-year residents to report Oregon additions, subtractions, modifications, and tax credits.
  • Schedule OR-ASC-NP (Forms OR-40-N and OR-40-P): Used by nonresidents and part-year residents to report Oregon additions, subtractions, modifications, tax credits, and income subject to Oregon tax.
  • Schedule OR-A: Used to claim Oregon itemized deductions if you choose to itemize instead of claiming the Oregon standard deduction.

3. Essential Filing Requirements

  • Supporting Documents: Include the Oregon schedules and forms required for your return. When filing Form OR-40, include a copy of your federal income tax return and the federal Schedules 1, 1-A, 2, and 3, when applicable. Do not include other federal schedules unless specifically required by the Oregon instructions.
  • Extension of Time to File: Oregon recognizes a valid federal automatic six-month extension. For the 2025 Oregon return, the extended filing deadline is October 15, 2026. An extension gives you additional time to file but does not extend the deadline for paying Oregon tax. To generally avoid the Oregon late-payment penalty, pay at least 90% of your Oregon tax liability by April 15, 2026. Interest may apply to unpaid tax.

4. Electronic Filing Options

  • Electronic Filing: Oregon individual income tax returns may be filed electronically through approved tax preparation software and other authorized electronic filing providers.
  • Direct File Oregon: Eligible full-year Oregon residents filing Form OR-40 may be able to use Direct File Oregon. Eligibility depends on the taxpayer's circumstances. Direct File Oregon does not currently support Form OR-40-P (part-year resident) or Form OR-40-N (nonresident) returns.
  • Revenue Online: Oregon Revenue Online can be used for services such as making payments, viewing account information, and checking refund information. It is not the same as the general Oregon electronic return-filing system.

Using Tax Software

  • To add Form OR-40 or Form OR-40-NP in tax preparation software, navigate to the state section, select Oregon, and follow on-screen prompts to enter personal, income, and deduction information.
  • For nonresidents or part-year residents, select Residential Information under the Personal section and proceed with residency status, filing status, and dependents.
