Other Credits: Schedule 6
Schedule 6, titled "Offset Credits," is used in conjunction with Indiana's individual income tax return (Form IT-40 or Form IT-40PNR) to report certain offset credits that reduce your tax liability. These credits are typically applied after other credits have been claimed and are designed to provide additional tax relief for specific qualifying expenses or contributions.
What is Schedule 6 Used For?
- Reports offset credits that reduce your total tax liability.
- Must be attached to Form IT-40 or Form IT-40PNR when filing.
- Instructions for completing Schedule 6 begin on page 36 of the IT-40 Booklet (for Form IT-40) or page 35 of the IT-40PNR Booklet (for Form IT-40PNR).
How to Report Offset Credits
On Form IT-40, Line 13 requires you to enter the total of any offset credits reported on Schedule 6. Similarly, on Form IT-40PNR, Line 13 also requires the total of offset credits from Schedule 6.
Ensure you complete Schedule 6 accurately and attach it to your return. The form includes specific instructions for calculating and reporting these credits, which may include credits for donations, education, or other state-approved programs.
Important Notes
- Always refer to the official instructions for Schedule 6, which are detailed in the IT-40 or IT-40PNR booklets.
- Do not include Schedule 6 if you are not claiming any offset credits.
- Verify all amounts entered on Schedule 6 with supporting documentation, as the Indiana Department of Revenue may request records.
