PA Military Pay for Active Duty

Military pay earned by Pennsylvania residents while on active duty status within Pennsylvania is subject to Pennsylvania personal income tax. This includes taxable military compensation reported on Form W-2, Box 16.

Taxable Military Pay in PA

  • Amounts reported in Box 16 of the W-2 are taxable for PA income tax purposes if earned while on active duty within PA.
  • Residents must include this amount on Line 1a of Form PA-40, Personal Income Tax Return.
  • If the W-2 includes both taxable and nontaxable military pay, taxpayers must submit a statement with their return detailing the breakdown and providing proof such as military orders.

Nontaxable Military Income

  • Nontaxable military income includes the difference between total military income earned and the amount reported as taxable compensation on Line 1 of Form PA-40.
  • Combat zone pay and hazardous duty pay are excluded from nontaxable military income calculations.
  • Enter nontaxable military income on the appropriate line of Form PA-40 (Line 7) or Form PA-40 SP (Line 4a).

Reporting Requirements

  • Include a copy of Pages 1 and 2 of your federal Form 1040 with your PA return if claiming nontaxable military income.
  • Provide documentation such as military orders to support claims of active duty status outside Pennsylvania for nontaxable pay.
