Pennsylvania Amended Tax Return
An amended tax return in Pennsylvania is used to correct errors or omissions in a previously filed individual income tax return. Whether you need to adjust your income, deductions, or credits, filing an amended return ensures your tax liability is accurate.
How to File an Amended Return
- Use the Correct Form: For individuals, use Form PA-40 (Individual Income Tax Return) or PA-40 EZ, clearly marking "AMENDED RETURN" at the top and filling in the "amended" oval on the front.
- File by Mail: Amended returns must be mailed to the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. Do not e-file an amended return.
- Include Only Amended Schedules: Attach only the schedules or forms that were corrected. Do not include the original return or original schedules.
- Payment or Refund: If you owe additional tax, mail it with your return to: PA DEPT OF REVENUE, PAYMENT ENCLOSED, 1 REVENUE PLACE, HARRISBURG PA 17129-000. If you are claiming a refund, mail to: PA DEPT OF REVENUE, REFUND OR CREDIT.
Filing Through OLT Software
If you originally filed your return using OLT (Online Taxes) software, you can file an amended return directly through your account:
- Sign in to your OLT account at www.olt.com.
- Go to your 'Tax Return Status' screen and select 'File an Amended Return'.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to update your information. The software will generate Form PA-40 X (Amended Return) and any corrected forms.
- Print and mail the completed forms to the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.
Important Notes
- Amended returns for estates and trusts require Form PA-41X and amended Schedules RK-1 and NRK-1.
- Do not send a copy of the original return with your amended return.
- For guidance on specific forms or instructions, refer to the official Pennsylvania Personal Income Tax Guide available at revenue.pa.gov.
