Presidential Election Campaign Fund
The Presidential Election Campaign Fund is a voluntary designation that taxpayers can choose when filing their federal income tax return. This fund helps finance presidential primary campaigns, general election campaigns, and national party conventions.
Choosing to participate does not increase your tax or reduce your refund.
How to Contribute
- Taxpayer Contribution: To add a contribution for yourself, access your tax return in the Online Taxes software. Navigate to My Info in the left menu (or tap the three dots on mobile), then go to the Personal section. Click Show more near Taxpayer Information, and select Add or Edit next to Presidential election campaign fund. Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Spouse Contribution: To add a contribution for your spouse, follow the same steps but navigate to the Spouse section under My Info, click Show more, and select Add or Edit next to Presidential election campaign fund.
Important Notes
- The designation is $3 per person ($6 for married filing jointly)
- It is not a tax deduction or credit
- The amount does not come from your refund and does not affect your tax liability
- You may also make or change the election on an amended return (Form 1040-X)
