Rhode Island Electoral System Contribution
The Rhode Island Electoral System Contribution allows taxpayers to support the public financing of the state’s electoral system by designating a voluntary contribution when filing their Rhode Island state income tax return.
Contribution Amounts
- Individual filers may designate a contribution of $5.
- Married couples filing jointly may designate $10.
Allocation of Contributions
Contributions are allocated as follows:
- The first $2 (or $4 for joint filers) is allocated to political parties that nominated a candidate for governor in the preceding general election.
- Any amount above $2 (or $4 for joint filers) is credited to the nonpartisan general account.
- If a taxpayer designates more than one political party, the contribution is credited to the first political party named.
- If no political party is designated, the contribution goes to the nonpartisan general account.
How to Designate the Contribution
Taxpayers can designate their contribution on Form RI-1040 (for residents) or Form RI-1040NR (for nonresidents). The contribution is made during the filing process and does not reduce tax liability or increase refunds.
Important Notes
- The contribution is voluntary and does not affect your tax due or refund.
- It is not considered a tax deduction or credit.
- Only one contribution per return is allowed.
