Schedule CRS - Credit Recapture Schedule

The Schedule CRS, also known as the Credit Recapture Schedule, is used by Massachusetts taxpayers to report and calculate recapture amounts for certain tax credits. This form is required when a taxpayer must recapture a previously claimed credit due to changes in circumstances, such as the disposal of an asset before the end of its useful life.

Key Instructions for Completing Schedule CRS

  • List Each Credit Subject to Recapture: Include every credit for which recapture is required. For credits tracked by certificate numbers, list each certificate number and its associated credit separately. For credits not tracked by certificate numbers, list them by type and the tax year they relate to.
  • Original and Revised Credit Amounts: For each credit, show both the original amount claimed and the revised amount after recapture calculation. The difference between these amounts represents the tentative recapture.
  • Partial Recapture for Assets: If only some assets placed in service during a year are subject to recapture (e.g., investment tax credit), report the total original and世 revised amounts only for those assets subject to recapture.
  • Unused Credit Portion: If any portion of the credit associated with a certificate number or tax year was never used, subtract that amount from the tentative recapture. Any remaining reduction not offset becomes recapture tax added to the return.
  • Credit Carryover Adjustment: Reduce any available credit carryover by the amount used to offset the tentative recapture.
  • Compliance Requirement: Taxpayers who have a recapture calculation must complete this schedule, regardless of whether recapture tax is ultimately due.

When Is Recapture Required?

Certain Massachusetts tax credits are subject to recapture as specified in the statute authorizing the credit. For example, the investment tax credit may be subject to recapture under MGL ch 63, § 31A(e) if an asset for which the credit was taken is disposed of before the end of its useful life. In such cases, the credit amount is redetermined, and any reduction in the allowable credit is recaptured to the extent it was previously taken or used.
