Utah Payment Options for Individual Income Tax Returns

When filing your Utah individual income tax return, you have several payment options available. The Utah State Tax Commission provides guidance on how to make payments, including estimated payments, prepayments, and payments for amended returns. Below are the key payment options and how to use them.

1. Estimated Payments and Deductions

Estimated payments can be made throughout the year to avoid underpayment penalties. To add estimated payments and deductions in the Online Taxes (OLT) software:

  • Go to the State section in your tax return.
  • Click "Start or Revisit Utah State."
  • Under the Payments section, select "Estimated Payments and Deductions."
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your payment details.

2. Prepayment Using Form TC-546

Form TC-546 is used to make a prepayment of your Utah income tax. This form is especially useful if you expect to owe taxes and want to make an advance payment. The form includes a worksheet to calculate the minimum payment based on your expected tax liability or prior year’s liability.

  • Complete line 1: Enter the tax you expect to owe this year.
  • Complete line 2: Enter the minimum payment rate (0.90).
  • Multiply line 1 by line 2 to get the minimum payment (line 3).
  • Enter your prior year’s Utah tax liability (line 4).
  • Enter the lesser of line 3 or line 4 as your minimum tax due by the original due date (line 5).

3. Mineral Production Withholding Tax (Form TC-675R)

If you received income from mineral production in Utah, you may need to report and pay withholding tax using Form TC-675R. This form requires details such as:

  • Recipient’s name and address (columns 8a–8g).
  • Utah mineral production gross payment (column 5).
  • Utah tax withheld on mineral production (column 6).

4. Voluntary Gifts/Contributions

You can also make voluntary gifts or contributions to the state through your tax return. To add this in the OLT software:

  • Navigate to the State section.
  • Select "Start or Revisit Utah State."
  • Under Payments, choose "Voluntary Gifts/Contributions."
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Amended Returns and Payment Adjustments

If you need to amend a previously filed return, use the forms and instructions for the year you are amending. You can access prior year forms and instructions at tax.utah.gov/forms.
