Virginia Contributions: How to Make Voluntary Donations on Your State Tax Return
When filing your Virginia state income tax return, you have the option to make voluntary contributions to various state programs and funds. These contributions are not required but can support important initiatives such as education, historic preservation, and general state operations.
Types of Voluntary Contributions
- General Fund Donation: You can donate to the Commonwealth’s General Fund by writing a check to the State Treasurer and designating it as a donation to the General Fund. This must be enclosed with Form GFD.
- Public School Foundations: You may contribute to eligible public school foundations, which support local education initiatives.
- Other Charitable or Educational Programs: Depending on your return, you may also contribute to other approved programs, such as those supporting historic preservation or land conservation.
How to Report Voluntary Contributions
Voluntary contributions are reported on your Virginia state tax return, specifically on:
- Form 763 (Individual Income Tax Return): Enter the total of your contributions on Line 14 of Section D, and then transfer that amount to Line 31.
- Form 760 (Individual Income Tax Return for Married Filing Jointly or Separately): Similarly, enter the total on Line 14 of Section D and transfer to Line 31.
For taxpayers using OLT (Online Taxes) software, you can add voluntary contributions by navigating to the State section, selecting "Yes" for making contributions, and following the on-screen prompts.
Important Notes
- Voluntary contributions are not tax-deductible for federal or state income tax purposes.
- You must include Form GFD with your payment if donating to the General Fund.
- Contributions must be made in cash or check and cannot be made via credit card or electronic funds transfer for certain programs.
