Virginia Extension and Payment Options
When filing your Virginia state income tax return, you may need additional time to complete your return or wish to make payments in installments. The Virginia Department of Taxation offers several options for extensions and payment methods to help taxpayers meet their obligations without penalties.
Requesting a Virginia State Tax Extension
If you need more time to file your Virginia state tax return, you can request an extension using Form 760IP. This form allows you to extend the filing deadline for your Virginia return, typically by 6 months, provided you file the extension before the original due date.
To request an extension through OLT (Online Taxes) software:
- From within your tax return (online), click on "State" in the left menu.
- Select "Start or Revisit Virginia State."
- Choose "View My Extension Return."
- On the FORM 4868: EXTENSION page, scroll to the bottom and click "File State Extension."
- Select Virginia and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the extension filing.
Payment Options for Virginia State Taxes
Virginia offers multiple payment options for taxpayers who owe state income tax. These include:
- Payment Coupon (Form 760-PMT): If your return shows an amount you owe, the software will automatically generate Form 760-PMT (Individual Tax Due Return Payment Coupon) with your personal details and the amount due. You can then mail this form with your payment.
- Estimated Tax Payments (Form 760ES): If you expect to owe tax for the year, you can prepare estimated payment vouchers using Form 760ES. In OLT software, navigate to the Payment section and select "yes" for "Do you want to prepare 2025 VA Estimated Payment Vouchers (VA-760ES)?" to generate these vouchers.
- Electronic Filing Declaration (Form VA 8453): When filing electronically, Form VA 8453 is automatically generated by the software and includes your personal details for electronic submission.
Important Notes
- An extension only extends the filing deadline, not the payment deadline. Any tax owed must still be paid by the original due date to avoid interest and penalties.
- Payment coupons and estimated tax vouchers must be submitted with payment as instructed by the software.
- OLT (Online Taxes) software guides you step-by-step through adding these forms during your return preparation.
