Retirement income in Ohio includes distributions from pension, retirement, or profit-sharing plans, annuities, and other retirement benefits received on account of retirement. Ohio Retirement Income Credit

- Income threshold: The credit is based on Ohio adjusted gross income (Ohio IT 1040, line 3).
- Eligibility: The total of senior citizen credit, lump sum distribution credit, and joint filing credit may offset income tax liability (Ohio IT 1040, line 8c).
How to Claim the Credit
When filing your Ohio state tax return using Online Taxes (OLT) software:
- Go to the State section in your tax return.
- Select "Start or Revisit Ohio State."
- Under the Credits section, choose "Ohio Retirement Income Credit."
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your details.
Important Notes
- Nonresidents cannot have retirement income allocated to Ohio due to federal preemption (R.C. 5747.08(H)).
- Retirement income must be reported on your federal return and included in Ohio adjusted gross income.
- For city-specific returns (e.g., Akron, Cincinnati, Perrysburg), additional forms may be required. Use OLT software to add city tax returns by selecting the appropriate city under "State" section.
