Utah Tax Extension: What You Need to Know
When filing your Utah individual income tax return, you may be eligible for an automatic extension. This extension allows you additional time to file your return without penalty, but it does not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed.
Automatic Extension Details
- Duration: You automatically receive a six-month extension to file your Utah individual income tax return.
- No Form Required: No extension form is needed to obtain this automatic extension.
- Payment Deadline Unchanged: The extension does not extend the deadline for paying your taxes. You must still pay any tax due by the original due date to avoid interest and penalties.
How to Use the Extension
If you wish to make a prepayment to avoid interest and penalties, you can use Form TC-546, the Prepayment Worksheet. This form helps you calculate the minimum payment required based on your expected tax liability.
- Line 1: Enter the tax you expect to owe this year.
- Line 2: Use the minimum payment rate (0.90).
- Line 3: Multiply line 1 by line 2.
- Line 4: Enter your Utah tax liability from the previous year (as filed, amended, or audited).
- Line 5: Enter the lesser of line 3 or line 4 as your minimum tax due by the original due date.
Important Notes
- The automatic extension applies only to filing, not to payment. Ensure you pay at least the minimum amount calculated to avoid penalties.
- Keep a copy of your return and any attached forms for your records.
- If you are using tax preparation software, you can add Form TC-546 by navigating to the State section and selecting the Prepayment Worksheet option.
