Virginia Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit
The Virginia Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit allows taxpayers to subtract from their Virginia taxable income any gain or income recognized in connection with the federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, to the extent it is included in federal adjusted gross income.
Eligibility and Requirements
- The rehabilitation work must be certified by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources as consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
- The request for certification must be submitted within 1 year of completing the rehabilitation work.

Claiming the Credit
- The credit is claimed as a subtraction on the Virginia income tax return (Form 760).
- Any unused credit may be carried forward for up to 10 years.
- The total credit claimed by each taxpayer, including carryovers, cannot exceed $7.5 million in any taxable year.
