Taxpayers can check the status of their West Virginia individual income tax refund online through the West Virginia Tax Division website. The refund status tool, commonly known as “Where’s My Refund?”, allows taxpayers to track the progress of their refund after filing a West Virginia income tax return.
Checking Your Refund Status
To check your West Virginia refund status:
- Visit the West Virginia Tax Division website at tax.wv.gov.
- Select the “Where’s My Refund?” option.
- Enter the required identification information, including:
- Social Security Number of the first taxpayer listed on the return.
- Other information requested by the refund status system.
The refund status tool provides updates on whether the return has been received, processed, or when the refund has been issued.
Electronic and Paper Returns
- Electronic Returns: Refund information is generally available after the return has been received and processed by the West Virginia Tax Division.
- Paper Returns: Paper-filed returns generally require additional processing time before refund information becomes available.
Taxpayers should allow adequate processing time before checking their refund status or contacting the Tax Division.
Duplicate Returns
If a taxpayer filed a paper return and the West Virginia Tax Division does not have a record of receiving the return, the taxpayer should contact the Tax Division before submitting another return. A duplicate return should not be filed unless the taxpayer determines that the original return was not received or the Tax Division requests a duplicate submission.
If a duplicate return is required, mail it to:
- West Virginia Tax Division
Attn: Duplicate Returns
P.O. Box 1071
Charleston, WV 25324-1071
Important Notes
- Refund processing times may vary depending on filing method, return accuracy, and required review procedures.
- Additional information may be requested before a refund is released.
- Keep copies of your filed return and supporting documents for your records.
